Our story

Sinéad, Jose and Evan Barroso

Established in 1997, Sol Rio is an award-winning restaurant run by husband and wife team, Portugal native head chef Jose Barroso and proud ‘Covey’ (Westport born and bred) Sinéad Lambert Barroso, who runs the front of house. Sinéad served on the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) council for 13 years, and was a founding member of Westport Food Festival. Jose and Sinéad’s son, Evan, is now also involved in the family business, along with their long-serving team, who have amassed more than 45 years’ service between them.

The Barrosos are committed to a philosophy of quality food sourcing with an emphasis on seasonal, local and artisanal ingredients. Sol Rio is also famous for its pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts), which are widely regarded as the best in Ireland. Located at the very heart of Westport, opposite the famous Matt Molloy’s pub, the restaurant places an emphasis on catering for a wide variety of dietary requirements (vegan, coeliac, etc) in a friendly environment, and is proud of its award-winning menu for young diners.

Over its two decades in business, Sol Rio has established a reputation for excellent food and value for money. To make a reservation or enquire about holding a special event or private party, phone us now on 098 28944.
